Formula

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

Availability = (Planned Time − Downtime) / Planned Time

Performance = Actual Output / Theoretical Max Output

Quality = Good Output / Actual Output

World-class standard: OEE ≥ 85%

Use Case

A plant manager needs to evaluate the true efficiency of a production line. OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) combines Availability (A), Performance (P), and Quality (Q) into a single metric. The world-class target is 85%, making OEE the most important equipment-effectiveness KPI in manufacturing and the core tracking metric for lean production and TPM programs.

Example

Planned production time 480 min/shift, downtime 60 min (30 min changeover + 30 min breakdown). Availability A = (480-60)/480 = 87.5%. Theoretical output 4,000 units/shift, actual 3,600. Performance P = 3600/4000 = 90%. Defects: 36 units. Quality Q = (3600-36)/3600 = 99%. OEE = 0.875 × 0.9 × 0.99 = 77.9%. Main loss: downtime (changeover + breakdown) — apply SMED to shorten changeover time.
